Open Windows & Screen Doors

If you're from my generation you probably remember growing up in an unairconditioned house.   On extremely hot, humid nights we would pull our beds under the open windows in hopes of feeling a little breeze.
My parents didn't get airconditoning until the summer after my first year of college.  Even then, Daddy would get up in the middle of the night and open windows and doors.
Our neighborhood grocery stores had screen doors similar to this one.
Some screen doors were fancy . . .
Can you imagine sleeping with your front and back doors open and your only security was a screen door with a little latch?  My how times have changed.

Summer begins tomorrow.
Remember, don't slam the screen door!  I miss the good old days!

Oh how I miss them too - remember when restaurants and grocery stores used to advertize refrigerated air? :)

It sure is a lovely day when the windows and doors can be left open to the breezes. I hadn't thought about how times have changed...I'm sure that in some communities it isn't safe to leave a window open even in the daytime. We don't have central AC here depending on window units instead. Guess that we will crank them up next week, but today is glorious.

Love the slap of a screen door, and it is a bonus if it squeaks. I remember Barnes grocery having a screen door.

Those were the good old days, except for school.

I once read a post that the one thing that had the most impact on changing things from the good ol days to what we have today is the invention of air conditioning. When air conditioning came along, the doors started closing all through the neighborhood. No one sat out on the front porch visiting with neighbors any more. I remember when I was a child all the parents were on the porches sipping lemonade and talking while the kids where playing kick the can, tag and hide and go seek. Since the onset of Air conditioning no one even knows who their neighbors are anymore! Yep the good ol days of screen doors was better by far!

I can still hear ours in the old farm house I grew up in. Love it. Thanks for the memories today. :)

I have actually been looking for a screen door for our patio door. It's hard to find a nice wood one. I do remember running through the house and slapping that screen door behind me.

I do not miss the no AC days. :)
