VBS Memories . . .

Early this morning when I woke up it was cool & rainy.
This sparked a memory of Vacation Bible School when I was a child.

VBS at our little Baptist church began the week
after Memorial Day & was a two week event.
None of our mothers worked out of the home
so they were experts of dedicating themselves to VBS.
I remember the first few days of VBS always being rainy & cool.
Here are a few of my memories of Vacation Bible School.
* Lining up on the front steps of the church for the grand entry
* Pledging allegiance to the American & Christian flags
* Memorizing scripture verses
* Fruit punch served in jelly glasses & homemade cookies
* Playing games on the church lawn
* Arts & crafts projects

One year when I was about 10 years old we made a rooster
on a large piece of plywood out of seeds.
Believe me, we needed the full two weeks to complete the project!

Now in the 21st century most churches have streamlined VBS.
Some hold VBS in the evening after parents get off work.
Now Mom & dad can both be part of the fun.

I have fond memories of VBS too. But more than that I have fond memories of teaching VBS. I loved the individuality of the art creations. I love the rooster. We used rice and macaroni. Nice post.

That is an awesome seed picture! I have many great memories of VBS too as a child. I can't wait until Mary is old enough to go:)

That rooster is great! I remember making pictures with seeds and noodles. Lexi enjoys going to VBS each year and has a ball!

Yes VBS back then was a simpler time of life. Now they are big themes and big programs to keep the computer age kids interested.
There has to be a balance. right?
Thanks for going down memeory lane today.

What fun memories.

A couple of years ago I wrote a five day puppet skit for our VBS. It was so fun!

I remember going to VBS in somebody's backyard! I thought it was great.

My own kids loved VBS. It was always so much fun to see the culmination of everything they did.

Ohhh, Carol- now you've hit on some sweet, sweet memories:) We had 2 weeks of VBS also. Your memories mirrored mine a lot-- lining up outside, memorizing verses, refreshments.

When I visit Mom, it is back to my hometown church on Sundaya- I love that place and those people who shaped my life and encouraged me along the way in my walk with God.

Thanks for this post, Carol. Good time:)

Hugs,
Linda C

Oh, I love the rooster! VBS has totally changed. You're right, all the mothers are working and can't be VBS leaders. I remember all of those same things you remember, and I remember getting a certificate at the end of the week. The cigar boxes covered with painted pasta! How long did my poor mother have to live with that on her dresser? Great memories. laurie
