May Day Memories . . .

Do any of you remember celebrating
May Day at school?
I have a few faded memories from 1st & 2nd
grade of the activities I did on May 1st.
I think the day was meant to be an ushering
in of summer & flowers.
Once we made a May Pole on the playground.
Here is a photo of a May Pole from 1913.

My favorite part of May Day was making
paper cones with handles, filling them with flowers,
& hanging them on my neighbors' front door knobs.
I would ring the doorbell & run away so they
wouldn't know who delivered their flower gift.

Happy May Day!

I remember the May pole but I think they stopped it right before I was old enough to participate. What a shame. Too many old traditions have disappeared.

Yes I remember May Day in Gradeschool. We too would make the paper scone and We made paper flowers to put in it. A simple time of life. I also remember day dreaming out the classroom window in the 3rd grade spying animals and different things out of the big white puffy clouds. I still can see that if it were yesterday. I never could focus on class work! Ha
Have a wonderful Friday
Love

I don't remember doing anything for May Day. I have read about making the little cones with flowers all over the blogs and I think that is just soooo NEAT!! Happy May Day Carol!!

My favorite teacher was my 3rd grade teacher & I remember we did the May pole the year I was in her class. This really brought back memories.
I wonder if kids ever do this anymore?

I remember our choir teacher trying to teach us how to do the May poll dance. I think we finally succeeded, but not without a lot of work. Sad to think that children can't run leave May Day cones on doors these days, because of the dangers out there. I loved your memory of doing it. I could just feel your excitement as a little girl, surprising the neighbors. laurie
