One Of my Favorites

Today I'm featuring one of my favorite authors & illustrators of children's books, Lois Lenski. If you're from my generation you may have read these books just as I did in elementary school in the early '60s.

Lois Lenski

Oct. 14, 1893 - Sept. 11, 1974

popular and prolific American writer & illustrator

of children's and young adult fiction.

My favorite books written by Lois are, 

The American Regional Series.

I have always been intrigued by the fact that Lois traveled to each region she wrote about to do her research. Not only did she illustrate all of the books she wrote, but also for other authors.

She included a picture map of the state that each book was written about.

My Favorite Lois Lenski book is, Prairie School.

This book if a portrayal of one winter in a one-room school in rural South Dakota. Delores and Darrell, with their schoolteacher Miss Martin, use their wits to survive the Great Blizzard of 1949 when stranded in the schoolhouse on the prairie.

School House Mantel

My mantel is a tribute to the one room school house.

A fun book featuring one room school houses across America.

Rose Hill School , located in Perry, Oklahoma.

My 4th grade class visited here every year for a day of learning circa 1910.

One year my mother went with us.  This is a little picture of us standing by the front door.

She had such a great time.  What a wonderful memory that is.

The book is an inspirational, true story about a school in Oklahoma.

My mother bought this schoolmarm and scholar figurine for me one day when we were shopping in Dollar General.  I found the book in an antique shop years ago.

We've been enjoying a wonderful,rainy day here in NE Oklahoma.

It has been weeks & weeks since we've had rain like this.

So grateful for the showers of blessings.

Maybe this is the end of the drought.

Playing School

I played around with some of the items that I have collected over the years to create a school vignette on the hall entry table.

Some things I used to decorate my classroom & some I used in our home office.

I found this wonderful picture of a school girl in an antique shop in my hometown many years ago.

When I saw the photo I fell in love with the image.

That big bow looks like it's made with a piece of torn taffeta, the edges are frayed.

Of course the fact she's holding an apple sealed the deal for me to buy it.

I think I paid $5.00.

The school house lamp from my classroom sits on top of the stack of old books.

The old globe has been on top of the filing cabinet in our office for years.

My favorite Norman Rockwell picture.

I found it at Garden Ridge years ago.

Back To School

This is dedicated to all you teachers who will be

Friday Fun

I mentioned yesterday that Ethan had been sick.

The kids have been staying with us since Saturday night because their air conditioning was broken.

It was fixed Wednesday & they were going to go home, but Ethan became sick with fever so they decided to stay another night because he was so sick. I have to tell you I was very concerned about his condition.   They ended up staying Thursday as well because he was experiencing all sorts of virus symptoms. Needless to say we did many loads of laundry.

Anyway, he was feeling so much better on Friday we spent a little time in the fresh air.
