Happy Halloween ! ! !

The candy is ready for . . .

cute ghosts and goblins!

I have fun memories of trick or treating when I was a kid.
The little lady on the corner gave out the most
yummy popcorn balls.
The neighbors that passed out chocolate bars were always our favorite stops.

Halloween was always a day of fun and innocence for us.

The last day of October means the holidays
of Thanksgiving and Christmas are fast approaching.

Enjoy your day . . . don't eat too much candy!

60 Days . . .

Today is October 25 . . .
which means 2 months from today is Christmas!
I know . . .
we haven't celebrated Halloween yet.
Good grief, I haven't even bought a real pumpkin yet!
Yes, I realize Thanksgiving is 30 days away.

I have lots of ideas floating around in my head about
decorating the house and what gifts to buy.

Have you started  planning for Christmas 2011?

First Frost . . .

We had our first frost this morning.
I have always liked the phrase,
"The frost in on the pumpkin".

I did a little research on Goggle.
I found this wonderful poem by poet James Whitcomb Riley
 ( 1849-1916)
A slice of folk Americana.

Autumn Weather . . .

Today was delightful!
Brisk wind, sunny skies, and temps in the upper 50s!
A freeze warning has been announced for tonight.

I'm hoping these pretty geranium blooms will survive on our deck.
I know their days are numbered,
but I'd like to enjoy them a little longer.

Hope you're enjoying your Autumn weather.

Random Monday Memories #22 . . .

Grandma had grit . . .

Yes, my Grandma Ruby had grit.
By that, I mean she had spunk.
Adventurous, creative, and hard working.

She also like reading the Grit Newspaper.
Before computers, Google, blogging, and Pinterest
she got national news stories, recipes, and DIY ideas from Grit.
You can read about the history of Grit here.

Every Saturday evening a neighborhood boy would knock on her door and she would buy the weekly Grit.
This ad was always in the paper.
I always wondered why it didn't say "Boys & Girls".

When my Great Grandma passed away her children cleaned out
her house and many furniture pieces were just thrown
in a creek bed. I guess that was a common practice back then.
Grandma saved a washstand that was being tossed.
She found a recipe in Grit for refinishing furniture.
When the family members saw the transformation they were
amazed.  I remember Grandma telling us that some of them said
they wished they had kept the washstand.
She promptly told them,
"You didn't want it, now it's mine."
I told you she had spunk!

I am lucky to now own the washstand.
What a treasure!
Here it is in my guestroom.

By the way, Grit is now a magazine.
I think I'll subscribe.
Here's the link if you're interested.

Seeing Double . . .

Thursday I received several birthday cards in the mail.
Two were from my sisters.
I opened Susan's card first and got a good laugh.
The last card was from Mary.
Guess what?
They both sent the same card!
This was not planned.
How funny!

The inside says . . .
Hallelujah!
It's your birthday.

Just goes to show that great minds think alike!

Anyway, today is my birthday.

The last year in the fabulous 50s. . .

Just Getting Started . . .

Today I got the urge to start adding Halloween Bling
 to my Fall Fluffing 2011!

A few weeks ago I found some great things
in the $ section at Target.

pumpkin visor for $1.00

I put it on this lamp shade in the living room.
I have no doubt Ethan will want to wear it when he visits.

glittery pumpkin garland for $2.50

I
 LOVE
this ceramic jack-o-lantern my grandma Ruby made in the 70s.

My boxes of Halloween Bling are in the attic.
Hubby will help me wrestle them down the stairs.
He's always willing to help!

Come back later in the week to see Halloween Bling 2011!
