Words That Inspire

Every sunrise is God's greeting,
the sunset His signature.

Last Sunday I posted a prayer request for my friend, Sharon.
Thank you for praying.  Sharon is still waiting for a liver transplant.  Right now she is fighting to get rid of an infection before she can receive a transplant.  Here is an update that her daughter, Amy, shared on Facebook yesterday.
"Today has been rough on Mom. She did do good walking earlier with PT. Her white blood cell count continued to raise so they have added more antibiotics & taken more blood cultures & had a CT scan of her liver. They are monitoring her heart closely too. She is worn out & resting right now."

Thank you friends for continuing to pray.

Getting Ready

For some reason I thought 4th of July was 2 weeks from yesterday.  Hubby informed me it was one week away!  Ugh oh!  Time to get ready for the festivities.
I borrowed the tool caddie from the grandkids' library area and gathered up some items for the holiday week.
I bought these flag plates at Big Lots 9 years ago for 79 cents each.  The BBQ napkins were made by my sister, Susan.
Now I need to get busy making a shopping list & doing a little more red, white & blue decorating.

Happy Friday everyone!

Our New Pool

We finally broke down & got a pool.  Yes, it broke the bank.
A Target bargain for $20!
The grankids & their cousin think it's just as good as a big pool.
Our 6'5", son looks so funny splashing around.
Even if the pool any lasts for one summer, it's well worth the 20 bucks.
Emma loved sitting on the edge.
Maybe next time she'll go in all the way.
Lucy & Snoopy don't have anything on us!  HA!

Recipe Reviews

We're starting to harvest tomatoes.
Total count so far, 9.  Looking forward to enjoying fresh tomatoes with salads, sandwiches, & salsas this summer.

Now for the review of the Pinterest recipes I tried yesterday.
These crackers are amazing.  I'm  renaming them 'fire crackers'.  If you want more heat just add more red pepper flakes.

The only herbs I had on hand was dill weed from my spice drawer & fresh Rosemary from my deck.  I cheated a little on the kneading & let my mixer with dough hook do the work.  I did not sprinkle with Kosher salt before baking because we try to steer clear of added sodium.
The herbs make them tasty.  Next time I may let my bread machine do the dough mixing work or I may try the old fashioned kneading.  Over all the rolls were good, but I think my family prefers old fashioned yeast rolls.

I'm not the 'Pioneer Woman', but it's fun trying, even if I make a huge mess in the kitchen!.

Pinterest Recipes

I'm trying a couple of Pinterest recipes today.
I've got a box of crackers in my pantry, so I decided to try this recipe for a fun appetizer & snack.
Spicy Hot Crackers
Spicy Hot Crackers. So Easy...So GOOD!
1 1/4 cups canola oil
1 (1 ounce) package ranch dressing mix
2 tablespoons red pepper flakes
1 (16 ounce) box saltine crackers

Directions:
Use a large 2 gallon ziplock storage bag or large plastic container.
Add the oil, ranch dressing mix, red pepper flakes and crackers. Tumble constantly for 15 minutes.

To serve with our steak dinner this evening.
Herb Rolls
Good to go right out of the pan.
(Makes 12 rolls)
Ingredients
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
3 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon table salt
1 tablespoon EACH minced flat-leaf parsley, dill,  chives and rosemary leaves
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 egg plus 1 tablespoon lightly beaten egg
1 cup milk or half-and-half
3 1/4 cups flour
1 tablespoon kosher salt
Directions
In a large bowl, sprinkle yeast over 1/4 cup cool (70-degree) water. Let stand 5 minutes. Stir in sugar, table salt, herbs, butter, whole egg, and milk; add flo9ur and stir just until moistened.

Knead dough on a lightly floured work surface until elastic and not sticky, about 15 minutes; add flour as needed to prevent sticking. Shape into 12 equal-size balls and transfer to a well-buttered 9-by-13-inch baking pan.

Let dough rise in a warm (about 80 degrees) place, covered loosely with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel, until doubled, 45 t0 60 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush rolls with beaten egg and sprinkle with kosher salt. Bake until deep golden, 25 to 30 minutes.

I'll give you a review tomorrow.

Super Sunday

Our Sunday was super!  Grilled chicken, oven fries, salad, cookies for a late lunch.  Later, hot dogs & etc.  The grandkids enjoyed slipping & sliding on the new slip & slide.
Ethan told us he was having fun.  Emma just watched.  She wasn't quite sure about getting wet.
Later, we sat on the deck & watched the Super Moon.
This was taken with my iPhone, excuse the poor quality.
I enjoyed seeing several Super Moon photos that my friends posted on Facebook.
Here's a couple of my favorites.

Framed by trees, by Susan.

Hope you had a super Sunday!

Open Windows & Screen Doors

If you're from my generation you probably remember growing up in an unairconditioned house.   On extremely hot, humid nights we would pull our beds under the open windows in hopes of feeling a little breeze.
My parents didn't get airconditoning until the summer after my first year of college.  Even then, Daddy would get up in the middle of the night and open windows and doors.
Our neighborhood grocery stores had screen doors similar to this one.
Some screen doors were fancy . . .
Can you imagine sleeping with your front and back doors open and your only security was a screen door with a little latch?  My how times have changed.

Summer begins tomorrow.
Remember, don't slam the screen door!  I miss the good old days!

Estate Sale Finds

Hubby & I went to an estate on our street Saturday morning.
Our neighbor is downsizing & moving to a smaller house.
I found some great things.
All this for $11.75.
This platter will be great for decorating & a serving piece.
blue basket $1.00, small frames .50 each & large frame .75
$2.00 box of vintage cookie cutters
$2.00 green lamp shade
It looks great on this tall skinny lamp.
The original beige shade was a little tired & needed a vacation in the closet.

Looking forward to shopping more estate sales on Saturday.

Father's Day Recap

We had a great Father's Day!
We went to church with the kids.
That's Bobby playing the guitar.  So proud of him for sharing his talent.

Bob & I ate "Sunday Chicken" at Cracker Barrel.

The kids came over in the evening for a grilled hamburger dinner.  We had to wait on a thunderstorm to end before Bob fired up the grill.  It was worth the wait.  Yummy burgers with grilled onions.

After dinner, the kids enjoyed playing in the rain with waters guns.
Daddy & son making memories.
Spending time with your children.
Priceless!
