The Monarchs Are Coming. . .

October is when my favorite butterfly makes an appearance in Oklahoma. I have always been fascinated with butterflies, especially Monarchs. Yesterday I saw several Monarchs flying around our yard. Of course, I got very excited! I knew I was going to be seeing a lot of my little friends in the coming days.

I love the richness of their orange & black contrasting colors.

Several years ago when we still lived on Lake Keystone I was walking behind our house enjoying a little walk just before sunset when all of a sudden I noticed that the tree branches were full of Monarch butterflies. What an unexpected, breathtaking sight! What I saw that evening was not quite the number of butterflies you see in this picture, but close. I decided that the Monarchs were 'roosting' for the night, just a resting place on their journey of migration. This beautiful spectacle continued for several evenings, almost a week. I had known for many years that the Monarch butterfly migrated through Oklahoma in October. We would see many flying around on bright sunny days during the first weeks of the month, but never had we witnessed them settling in trees for the night. That particular year was the biggest migration we had ever seen. That year I began teaching a science unit about the Monarch in my classroom. The day after seeing so many Monarchs I took my class outside to count the number of butterflies that were fluttering by the school. There were so many that day it was virtually impossible to count. How exciting! Since that year we have not seen the large number of Monarchs coming through. Maybe this year!

Here is a map showing the path they take during the seasons of the year. Come on little friends, come this way, you're welcome to visit!

God's creation is so awesome, thank you Lord for making your presence known in nature!

Wonderful Wednesday. . .

I love Wednesday, it's mid-week, which means we're on the downhill slide to the weekend! The sun is shining & the temperature is cool & crisp. I'll probably venture out today to see what I can find at a few stores.

Yesterday I remembered I had this cute ceramic pumpkin in the hall bathroom cabinet. I don't keep it with my other halloween decorations in the attic because I'm afraid it might get broken. My grandma Berger made this over 30 years ago. She was very much into making ceramics. Love his BOO mouth!

Here's the only gem I found at Goodwill yesterday. I know it probably had a lid at one point, but for 75 cents I thought it would be a great candy dish. It was very grimy so I gave it a soak in the sink & then washed it in the dishwasher, it came out sparkling!

Hope your Wednesday is wonderful!!

Happy Birthday Little Sister. . .

Happy birthday to my little sister, Susan! Susan was born when I was in the 4th grade. I remember how excited I was to come home for lunch & meet my new sister. Hope you have a special day today little sis!!! Love you!!

Today is 25% off all purchases for senior citizens at Goodwill. I guess that's a good reason to be 55 years old, LOL!! :>) Last month when I went exploring at Goodwill on 25% off day I found 5 items for less than $5.00 dollars, what fun!

Bye everyone, have a terrific Tuesday!

It's Monday & I certainly hope all of you are having a marvelous day! I'm doing much better now since my tooth extraction is over!! The only good thing about this procedure is Dr. D. Woodward is a wonderfully kind, caring, Christian doctor. This is my 2nd time to see him. I love you Dr. Woodward, thank you for your prayers! :>)

Well, enough about me! I'm anxiously wanting to hear what fun recipes & projects you gals may have plans for this week. Looking forward to reading your blogs.

Have a wonderful day!! :>)

Sunday Family Dinner. . .

Today we had a great time hosting a family dinner for Bobby, Kari, Branson, Kristi, Victor, & Jannette at our house. I can't believe it ,but we didn't take one single picture! I guess we were so busy preparing, serving, & visiting we forgot.
Bob has become quite the expert at smoking meat. Here's the entire menu. . .
Bob's famous smoked pork ribs, pork loin, sausage, & bologna
Corn bread salad
Coleslaw
Baked beans
Scalloped potatoes

Dessert
Coconut cake
Hope you had the chance to share a meal with someone you care for today. Here's a little saying that means a lot to us. . .
The fondest memories are made when gathered around the table.

Garage Sales. . .

My hubby & I went to several garage sales in our subdivision. We met a few neighbors for the first time, very nice folks. Bob bought some air filters (4 for$1.00) & 2 brandnew brass kick plates for our front door ($1.00 each).
I had high hopes to find some items for our grandbaby who will be arriving in March. I need a carseat base for our car & a pack'n play for our house. No such luck. I'll go searching again next weekend.

I also had great expectations for finding little decorating treasures. Well, as you can see I only bought 4 items. The picture was $1.00 (I'll change the color & picture), never used wall candleholder was $2.00 (original price was $10.00), & large votive candleholders 2 for $1.00.

Well friends, I need to get busy baking a coconut cake & getting things ready for our family dinner tomorrow. Hope your Saturday is all that you had planned it to be! :>)

What A Deal. . .

Well, we've made it to Friday! Wanted to share some of my great deals I found recently. If you're like me when you find a great bargain you get all excited & want to let out a little squeal right there in the store. Of course I remain poised, calm, and collected. Most of the time when I'm searching & shopping for treasures I'm by myself & can't express my glee of discovery because I'm really very shy around strangers. Occasionally if several of us bargain hunters are looking at the same display I'll chat it up about what a great deal the store is offering. But, my favorite moment is when I'm all by myself and I find something really wonderful for a very cheap price. Earlier this week I was shopping at Kohl's (love that store) & I found a large picture for $10.89 that was originally over $100.00. The picture was pretty, I liked it except for the fact that the colors weren't my style & taste. I passed. Sigh! Even yesterday I kept thinking about that picture & what a great deal it was.

Aren't these cute jack-o-lanterns? They have a battery operated light. I found them at Dollar Tree last week.

Excuse the bad photography, maybe you can see the tag says TJMaxx, $14.99.

The jar is about 20 inches tall. I have been looking for one of these for sometime. Last week I found one in a booth at a shop I love to go into to get decorating ideas for $40.00. Of course I passed. My patience paid off, what a deal I got!!

My Goodwill buy for this week. This Cake stand & dome was $2.00. The ceramic pumpkins were 99 cents at Walgreens, found them last week.

Found this deal at Kohl's. This looks like a fun application for the wall. I have been eyeing these at other stores, didn't know Kohl's had them. 1/2 price, $14.99. I'll show you where I use these another day.

Got to get busy cleaning house. We're having a family dinner here Sunday after church. Need to shop for food. More later, have a fantastic Friday!

Halloween Touches. . .

My goodness, what a beautiful, glorious day! I went to the attic to bring out the Halloween goodies & discovered I don't have as many things as I thought I had, so I may need to go searching & shopping for a few more touches.

These little cuties bring back memories from the past. The pumpkin was made by a 3rd grader & her mom back in the '80s. I sat the little bunny witch on top. She was a gift from a mom of one of my students about 15 years ago. She is a very talented lady, I have several of her creations.

Have you ever heard of Lizzie High dolls? They were very popular back in the '80s. This is Marisa Valentine & her little brother Petey, they're all ready to trick or treat!

Another blast from the past, the '70s to be exact. This is the 'Peanut's Book of Pumpkin Carols.' My music students always had fun singing these little ditties. Casper looks like he's having a good time!

More trick or treaters!

These happy guys will go outside beside the front door later in the month.

Enjoy your day and everything you encounter!

Welcome October. . .

I thought I'd start the month off with a super simple craft project, and I mean simple! I'm using some ribbon I bought years ago at Wal-Mart for 88 cents to make a picture mat. I have the cutest print from an old Mary Engelbreit magazine. I know the picture doesn't show up very well, but the message says, 'The best way to predict the future is to create it.' I bought the frame at Hobby Lobby a few weeks ago, I think it cost $2.00.

#1. . . measure & cut the ribbon for all 4 sides.
#2. . . make double sided tape by rolling small pieces of tape, attach ribbon on left & right, then top & bottom.

#3. . . place picture in frame, replace picture back & there you have it, a cute Halloween picture! I told you it was super simple. I will change the picture each month using other prints from ME magazine.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!!

Goodbye September. . .

I can't believe September has flown by so quickly! The flowers on our deck are still beautiful and will probably stay that way until the first hard freeze in November. I'm still getting an occasional visit from hummingbirds. I noticed yesterday a hummingbird was fighting away honey bees that were visiting the feeders.
Today is a beautiful day despite the fact I'm going to the dentist. One of my crowns came off Sat. Ugh! I hate going to the dentist!
Happy last day of September to you all! Enjoy your day!

Indian Summer Sunday. . .

Today was indeed an Indian summer Sunday. Beautiful clear blue sky, sunshine, & mid 80's temperatures. We ate lunch at our favorite Italian cafe along the river. Later in the day we spent a few hours at the Tulsa State Fair. It was very crowded. We drove around for quite a while looking for a parking place. There were so many people, at times you could barely move while we were in the QT Center. Let me just put it this way, I was very glad when we headed home.
Enjoy your evening, I'll check in with you tomorrow.

Day Of Sharing Together. . .

This little plaque says it all.
Today was a fun day. We had a great time this morning visiting with my husband's classmates. Even though I was not in his graduating class I enjoy talking with people & hearing stories about their school days. Branson's brother, Victor and his wife, Janette were in Bob's class. After the gathering was over the four of us drove to Branson's house to check out the moving in progress. They had accomplished a lot today.

Hope your day was great no matter what you were doing. I'm ready to take it easy now & watch a little college football. Until next time, take care!

Fabulous Friday. . .

I hope your Friday was fabulous! We were busy again today helping Branson & Kristi unpack , hookup the fridge, washer, & dryer.
Tomorrow morning we will be going to a class reunion breakfast in Bob's hometown . I hope we can find some garage sales there to see if any treasures are waiting to be discovered. There are several subdivision garage sales near our house, maybe we'll get back in time to check out what's available. I'm looking for baby items for our grandbaby who will be arriving in a few months.
What are your plans for the weekend? Hope to hear from you soon!

New Kitchen. . .

Now don't get too excited, no, this is not my new kitchen, wish it was. This is our brother-in-law, Branson's new kitchen in his new house. He & his daughter, Kristi just moved to our area from Houston. Branson was married to Bob's sister, Kay who passed away in April. Branson's house in Houston received a lot of damage when hurricane Ike hit. Fortunately he had purchased this house a few weeks before. We are so happy to have them close by. My son, Bobby and I put shelf paper in all the shelves, drawers, & pantry. We also unpacked several boxes. There are so many cabinets! I would love to have a kitchen this size.

Welcome to Oklahoma Branson & Kristi!

Granny B's Salt & Pepper Shakers. . .

Late last night I remembered I had these cute pumpkin salt & pepper shakers that belonged to my Grandma Berger. Early this morning I went to the attic to find them. Ruby loved to collect & display all kinds of knick knacks. I'm sure that's where I get my desire to "fluff my nest"! I remember being fascinated with all her neat things when I was a child.

I've been busy today sweeping, dusting, etc., etc. :>( Not my favorite thing to do, but it's got to be done. I vowed when I retired to do these chores during the week when my DH was at work instead of both of us doing it all on the weekends as we have done for so many years.

Well, I'm off to the post office. Wishing you all a fabulous day, God bless!

Welcome Autumn Part Two. . .

I'm so excited that my son helped me set up music on my blog. Thanks Bobby for being patient with me!
Today I've posted more pictures of our house all decorated for fall. Excuse the quality of the photos, I have an old camera. I'm hoping for a new camera soon, my birthday's next month. (hint, hint!) Today is going to be another beautiful day here in Oklahoma. Hope your day is a good one!
Here is my antique kitchen cabinet that I refinished over 30 years ago.

Here is another old cabinet that was in my sister's basement 25 years ago. She didn't want it when she moved to Houston, so we took it home.

I love this antique quilt, it's perfect for this time of year.

I enjoy the picture hanging over my piano, to me it represents my sisters & me. I bought this piano the first year I taught and made $35.00 a month payments until it was paid in full.

Big Bargains!

Today I stopped by Big Lots & found some great deals on fall decor. I bought leaf garlands, a fall wreath, & a cute harvest flag for my son & daughter-in-law as a house warming gift to decorate their front porch. They recently moved from an apartment to a house so they definitely needed some things to fluff the new nest. I bought some adorable turkey placemats for myself for $1.50 each. Gobble, gobble!

Tomorrow my goal is to get out my stash of fall goodies from the attic & my recent buys & get started decorating the entire house! Very fitting choice of activity for the first day of autumn don't you think?! Hopefully I can finish the project , possibly take pictures & post them tomorrow afternoon.

Hope you all had a relaxing day & God touched you in a special way!

We Love Our Saturdays. . .

My DH & I really enjoy spending time together on Saturday. We usually eat breakfast at our favorite little family cafe. The food is so delicious and the people are warm & friendly. We enjoy stocking up on supplies at Sam's and shopping for seasonal vegetables & fruit at the produce stores in our area. Sometimes we do chores & projects, go looking for garage sales, or just drive around admiring the countryside. We love our Saturdays no matter what we're doing!

Hopefully I'll be posting some pictures soon!!! :>)
